# Language in Context — Immersion Mode

> A free Chrome extension for learning a language while you browse the web. You choose a percentage of each page to translate (for example 20%), and those words are swapped in place into the language you are learning. Hover any translated word for the original text, conjugation, noun gender and pronunciation. Translation runs locally with Chrome's built-in on-device models: no account, and nothing you read is sent anywhere.

## What it does

Language in Context is a browser extension for immersive, comprehensible-input style language learning. Instead of studying in a separate app, you read the websites you already visit, with a controllable share of the words translated into your target language so you learn vocabulary in context.

## How it works

1. **Pick a language and an immersion level.** A slider sets how much of each page is translated. 5–20% is a comfortable start; around 60% is for when you are getting fluent.
2. **Browse like normal.** News, Wikipedia, recipes, blogs. Words change in place, highlighted from red to green depending on how familiar each word is to you.
3. **Hover when you get stuck.** A hover card shows the original phrase, the full conjugation table with the form the sentence used highlighted, noun gender (masculine/feminine), and pronunciation. It flags its own guesses.
4. **Practice.** Words you have encountered become quick spaced-repetition quizzes. Graduate words once you have mastered them.

## What gets translated, and what is left alone

Translated:
- The article or main text you are reading
- YouTube captions as you watch

Left alone:
- Links, so you can still tell where they go
- Names and places
- Numbers, code, and text fields you type into
- Menus, headers and footers
- Any single page you switch it off on
- Any whole domain you add to the blocklist

## Chinese support

Chinese words appear with pinyin colored by tone, plus HSK level badges.

## Video

YouTube subtitles are translated at the immersion level you set, so you learn while watching.

## Privacy

- Translation uses Chrome's built-in on-device models, so it works offline after the language pack downloads.
- Download more language packs whenever you want.
- No account, no analytics, no telemetry.
- Your browsing history and the pages you read stay on your computer.
- Optional: you can submit an individual translation correction to improve translations for the community. It is only sent when you press Send.

## FAQ

**Is Language in Context free?**
Yes. It is free and needs no account.

**Does it send the pages I read to a server?**
No. Translation happens on your own computer using Chrome's built-in on-device translation model. The only thing ever sent is a translation correction you choose to submit.

**Which browsers does it support?**
Desktop Google Chrome, version 138 or later.

**How many languages does it support?**
48 languages, including Spanish, French, German, Italian, Portuguese, Japanese, Korean and Chinese (with pinyin and HSK levels).

**Can I turn it off on some sites?**
Yes. Switch it off for a single page, or blocklist a whole domain. Gmail and GitHub are blocked by default.

**Who is it for?**
Language learners who want daily, low-effort immersion: reading real content in context rather than isolated flashcards.
