Language in Context — learn a language while you browse the web
Language in Context is a free Chrome extension for immersive language learning. Choose a percentage of each page to translate into the language you are learning, and those words are swapped in place as you read. Hover a translated word for the original text, conjugation, noun gender and pronunciation. Translation runs locally with Chrome's built-in on-device models: no account, and nothing you read is sent anywhere.
Get it for Chrome — free, desktop Chrome 138 or later, 48 languages.
How it works
- Pick a language and a level. A slider sets how much of each page is translated: start around 5–20%, and go to 60% as you get fluent.
- Browse like normal. News, Wikipedia, recipes. Words change in place, highlighted red to green by how familiar they are.
- Hover when you get stuck. See the original phrase, the conjugation the sentence used, noun gender and pronunciation.
- Practice. Words you have seen become spaced-repetition quizzes.
What gets translated
The article you are reading and YouTube captions. Links, names and places, numbers, code, input boxes, menus, headers and footers are left alone, as is any page or domain you switch off.
Chinese support
Chinese words appear with pinyin colored by tone, plus HSK levels.
Privacy
Translation happens on your own computer and works offline. No account, no analytics. The only thing ever sent is a translation correction you choose to submit. Read the privacy policy.
